The Guardian columnist calls Murdoch’s withdrawal from BskyB bid — Our Berlin Wall moment.
So the phone hacking scandal has been pootling along from one nut-busting revelation to the next for ages now. Until today when this happened.
| “ | BREAK SKY SOURCES: NEWS CORP TO WITHDRAW BID FOR BSKYB |
|
As you can see this is clearly big news, as the usually reserved Tim Gatt has employed full caps for this tweet, and hasn’t even bothered adding the correct suffix to one of his words. Unsurprisingly this news sparked a wave of contentment to spread throughout Twitter.
| “ | So BSkyB bid over. PCC to be abolished. Senior News International staff arrested. Inquiry into police and press on its way. Yep. I’m happy |
|
| “ | You liberal punks enjoy kicking Murdoch when he’s down. I appeal to you to show him the same respect & courtesy that he has shown to others. |
|
And so forth and so on.
But easily the best moment of the day came when George Monbiot — an awesome thoughtful and courageous journalist — got a bit carried away and well, here’s his tweet.
| “ | This is our Berlin Wall moment. |
|
Really George? Really?
| “ | OK, that was a bit over the top, I admit. But it’s hard to find the right words for how big a moment this is. |
|
But he’d said it.
| “ | Hahaha. I’ve just seen this. PAGING MR CRAIG BROWN… RT:@GeorgeMonbiot
This is our Berlin Wall moment. |
|
| “ | Why stop there, @GeorgeMonbiot? Isn’t it more like HIROSHIMA? Is it not, in fact, tantamount to PUTTING A MAN ON THE MOON??? |
|
Alright Hugo, it was probably said in a spirit of exaggeration. We’ve all got carried away from time to time. I would read what you think about the matter, but of course, all your articles are behind The Times paywall, so therefore no-one is reading them.
It’s easy to forget or certainly become apathetic to the significance of this story, especially receiving it in the piecemeal way we have. But let Jon Stewart put in some sort of perspective for you.
